Sometimes those behaviors sound much more attractive than dealing with my harsh reality of anxiety and depression and grieving and self-hate and not enough-ness. One of the most difficult lessons of sobriety, especially for the stubborn among us, is that you probably can’t do it alone. “I feel like someone just jumped out and yelled BOO,” I would tell my husband. Some people get there faster than others. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Their recovery is none of your business, and vice versa. Sobriety starts to get better when you stop living exclusively in your painful past and start caring about a future that has potential.

You can use it to work on your hobbies, learn new skills, spend time with your loved ones, work out, or anything else you please. Ask any sober person whether they want to go to a cocktail party or stay in with a pack of La Croix, The Crown, and a bathrobe. I’d bet nine out of 10 of us won’t even answer, and we’ll just laugh because it’s such a ridiculous question. Sobriety doesn’t necessarily turn you into Liz Lemon, but it can give you the clarity to understand that you’ve been Liz Lemon your whole life. This is an opportunity to assert for your needs, and therefore assert your worth. There is no one way to deal with this.
